Counting Lesson #1

You’ve already met the Quarter Note. In this lesson we will begin to learn how to use it.

Counting Sound & Silence

Take a deep breath and play the following quarter notes. Say “ta” on each note, pronounced like “Tom.”

Are you out of breath?

YES!

Luckily, music is made up of sound AND silence.

Remember, a NOTE means sound – a REST means no sound.

Rests tell you not to play AND give you a chance to breathe.

Are you out of breath now?

NO!

If there are 100 notes on a page, won’t it be hard to count to 100 and play at the same time?

Is there an easier way?

Let’s go to the next lesson and find out.
